Qualities of a Nurse: #1

1. Be A Strong Communicator

Communication skills are important in practically any profession, some would even say that it is the basic foundation, but it’s especially important in nursing. The ideal nurse has excellent communication skills, especially when it comes to speaking and listening, and they take into consideration both the team and patient feedback, are able to solve problems, and most importantly, communicate effectively with patients and their families. Effective communication helps healthcare professionals connect with patients and build relationships as well as prevents mistakes and misunderstandings - as such, nurses have to make sure that their patients are clearly understood. It aids in the provision of a higher level of care, which is and should be the standard. Communication in nursing is an academic subfield on its own and is guided by multiple communication theories that, in a positive manner, help to explain and guide the nurse-patient interaction.

The truly diverse nurse has to be an advocate for his/her patients.
